# Subnames

> Create separate identities and receiving destinations beneath a name you hold.

A subname adds a purpose to an existing name. If you hold `alice.nova`, you can create `shop.alice.nova` for your shop and `tips.alice.nova` for contributions. Each can publish its own receiving details, network addresses and profile records.

You manage those subnames through your ownership of `alice.nova`. You do not need to apply for another namespace or transfer control to the wallet receiving the payments.

<Illustration name="subnames" alt="The holder of alice.nova controls the child names pay.alice.nova and shop.alice.nova." caption="The holder of alice.nova controls its subnames, even when they receive at different wallets." />

## Read the name from right to left

In `shop.alice.nova`:

| Part | What it means |
| - | - |
| `nova` | The namespace, operated under its own registration rules |
| `alice` | The name held within that namespace |
| `shop` | A subname controlled by the holder of `alice.nova` |

Soran currently supports **one child level**: `child.name.namespace`. You cannot create another level beneath `shop.alice.nova`.

Each part uses 1–63 ASCII letters, numbers or hyphens, with a letter or number at each end. Names are normalized to lowercase.

## Give each subname a job

A subname can point to a different Stellar destination from its parent, including a complete payment instruction with a required memo or muxed routing ID. It can also publish [other-network addresses](/concepts/multichain-addresses) and a [public profile](/concepts/profiles).

For example, `shop.alice.nova` could route payments to a business account while `tips.alice.nova` routes them to Alice's personal wallet. The parent holder controls both records. Neither receiving wallet gains ownership merely by being named as a destination.

Supporting apps resolve the complete subname through the same shared lookup system they use for ordinary names.

## Namespace rules still apply

The namespace owner sets one subname policy for its holders:

| Policy | Effect |
| - | - |
| Enabled | Holders can create, edit and remove subnames. |
| Stop new subnames | Existing subnames still work and can be edited or removed. |
| Suspend subnames | Resolution and record editing pause. Saved records remain; holders can remove subnames. |

Compatible Registrar and Resolver contracts are required. Subname creation starts disabled until the namespace owner enables it.

## Subnames depend on their parent

A subname is not independently transferable or renewable. When its parent expires, the subname stops resolving. Renewing the same ownership restores its valid records.

A parent transfer, reclaim or reissue invalidates its existing subnames. The new holder must recreate the ones they want. Removing and recreating a subname starts a fresh record, so earlier receiving addresses and profile data do not silently return.

Even under a permanent namespace, a subname remains controlled by its parent holder. Its lifecycle is different from an independently held name.
